Gophers are very difficult to control. I've tried these as well as some other strategies and found only two things seem to work. One is to protect the plant with a metal cage (chicken wire or finer spaced mesh) underground when you place the plant in the ground. Since this is rather difficult and takes a lot of time, the only other method is to trap the gophers. I've used a trap purchased at Navelets which is a plastic tube open at one end with a snare and place a carrot in the other end. This seems to work, but you have to be persistant. Place the trap into one of their underground paths. They are rather active and will usually find the trap in a day or so and may push dirt into it, but it usually works over time. Good luck!
