Vacation Security

If you leave town for vacation there are several things you should do t reduce your risk of becoming a victim of crime:

bulletContact your Sheriff's Office and fill out a vacation house check.  During your time away a deputy will periodically check on your home for you.
bulletNotify neighbors that you will be leaving town and give them a contact number in case of emergency.
bulletStop all our services such as: Newspaper, mail delivery, etc.
bulletEnable your alarm system.
bulletPut lights on a timer (interior and exterior).
bulletLeave on a TV or radio so it sounds like someone is home
bulletHave a neighbor park in your driveway so it appears that someone is coming and going.

Personal/Home Safety

bulletSecure your doors and windows (including your garage doors).
bulletSecure access to your yard and the rear of the house.
bulletMake sure you exterior lighting is adequate and functional.
bulletExterior lighting should eliminate dark recesses where a would-be attacker could hide.
bulletTrim shrubs for good visibility.
bulletUse your landscape to create barriers to access points.  Such as a row of thorny roses under bedroom windows.
bulletInstall an alarm system and use it faithfully.
bulletRemove valuables from plain sight.
bulletInstall a wide-angle door viewer (peephole).
bulletALWAYS use your door viewer when answering the door.
bulletClose your drapes in the evening hours.
bulletNever open your door to a stranger for any reason.
bulletCheck the identification of any sales or service persons before letting them in.
bulletDiscuss and post safety rules and emergency numbers for your children.
bulletDiscuss what to do in an emergency with your children.
bulletBegin a Neighborhood Watch Program through the Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit.
